Car jacking is the theft of a car by force and intimidation often provoked by thrill-seekers
or in order to complete rites of passage. As sophisticated car alarms
and locking devices make vehicles harder to steal, car jackers commit thefts
of opportunity' and look for the following car-jack cues to assault you and steal
your car:
* Intersections controlled by stoplights/stop
signs.
* Garages and parking lots for mass traffic
(malls, commuter lots).
* ATM's or bank machine
drive-throughs.
* Crowded highway ramps.
* Quiet, secluded suburbs.
* Lone drivers.
Car
jackers typically rear end their victim in traffic. When you get out
to inspect the damage, the car jacker or their passenger will jump into your
car and drive off.
To reduce your risk of car jacking:
* Have your key ready when approaching your car.
* Looking in and under your car before getting in.
* Be wary of people approaching your car.
* Sound
your horn if threatened.
* Keep your car in good repair
with a full gas tank.
* Carry a portable alarm ($10
- $30).
* Keep doors and windows locked when uneasy.
* When stopped in traffic leave room to maneuver around
the car in front.
* Drive in the center lane.
* Avoid driving alone & especially at night.
* Don't stop when asked for help; instead offer to drive to a phone to call
police.
* Park in well-lit areas.
* Never leave valuables in view (cell phones, wallets).
* Park in garages with attendants.
